at K-State's Community Health Institute

New CHI Faculty Associate Scientist

Dr. Elizabeth Fallon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, joined CHI in August 2006 as a new Faculty Associate Scientist. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Florida, and her master's and Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of Florida. During her graduate studies , Dr. Fallon focused on the following two research areas : (a) the relationship between exercise and the body image and (b) the transtheoretical model for exercise behavior .It is the later of these  two areas of research that led her to a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Carolina where she studied theory-based public health approaches for the acquisition and maintenance of physical activity and health dietary behaviors in undeserved populations .Beginning her first faculty position as an assistant professor here at Kansas State University , Dr Fallon is excited to collaborate interdepartmentally  to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors for all Kansans .In her "spare time " she enjoys jogging , hiking , playing sports (especially softball and Tennis ), traveling and cheering for the Chicago Cubs and Florida Gators .

HOP'N After School Project Launches New Website

HOP'N After School , a program for promoting healthy opportunities  for physical activity and nutrition in 4th grade children under the direction of Dr. David Dzewaltowski, launched a new website in August 2006 (www.hopn.org). This site provides web support for HOP'N program staff which includes valuable resources , training material , publications , presentation and a forum for sharing ideas .The website also provides resources and information for educators , key partners and researchers in the field of public health and physical activity . Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture , the aim of the project is to evaluate the impact of the newly developed HOP'N After School Program on 4th grade children's youth development (physical activity and healthy eating beliefs ) , healthy eating , physical activity and risk of overweight .

Active Living Research Conference

The 3rd Annual ALR Conference will be February 16-18, 2006, in Coronado, California. For more details, go to www.activelivingresearch.org.

Upcoming Guest Speaker

Dr. Ross Brownson from the Saint Louis University of Public Health will be speaking on the built environment and community based physical activity interventions in February 2007 .More details will be available soon .

Dr. Kelly Evenson from the University of North Carolina , Chapel Hill Public School of Public Health will be speaking May 3 , 2007 on physical activity and the environment .More details will be available soon .
